Yoga for Beginners in Ratlam: What to Expect in Your First Class

Thinking about starting yoga but feeling a little nervous? You're not alone. Many people tell us, "I'm not flexible enough for yoga" or "I don't know what to do in class." The truth is, you don't need to be flexible, fit or experienced to start. You just need to show up.

If you're planning your first yoga class in Ratlam, here's everything you need to know.

Do I need to be flexible to do yoga?

No. Flexibility is something yoga builds over time, not something you need before you begin. Every body is different, and a good teacher will adapt each pose to suit you. At Satva, we believe there is no right age and no right body for yoga. Yoga is for everyone.

What should I wear?

Wear comfortable clothes you can move and stretch in, such as a t-shirt with track pants or leggings. Avoid jeans or very loose clothes that slip down when you bend. Yoga is practised barefoot, so you don't need special shoes.

What should I bring?

  • A water bottle

  • A small towel

  • Your own yoga mat, if you have one

When should I eat before class?

Try to practise on an empty or light stomach. Leave about 2–3 hours after a full meal, or 1 hour after a light snack. Morning classes before breakfast work well for many people.

What happens in a beginner yoga class?

A typical beginner class at Satva lasts one hour and follows a simple flow:

  1. Settling in (5 minutes): sitting quietly, noticing your breath and leaving the day behind.

  2. Warm-up (10 minutes): gentle neck, shoulder, wrist and hip movements.

  3. Asanas (30 minutes): basic standing, seated and lying poses, explained step by step.

  4. Pranayama (5–10 minutes): simple breathing exercises to calm the mind.

  5. Relaxation (5–10 minutes): lying down in Shavasana to let the body rest.

You'll be guided through every pose, with options to make it easier or more challenging.

What will I feel after my first class?

Most beginners feel relaxed, lighter and a little stretched. You may feel mild stiffness the next day, which is normal and fades quickly. After a few weeks of regular practice, many students notice better sleep, less back pain, more energy and a calmer mind.

How often should a beginner practise?

Two to three classes a week is a great start. Consistency matters more than intensity. As our manifesto says, "It is not magic. It is patience. Come back enough mornings, and the magic arrives on its own."

Tell your teacher about your health

Before your first class, let your teacher know about any injuries, surgeries, back or knee pain, blood pressure, or other health conditions. This helps her adapt the practice so it's safe for you.
